Baby books: Birth to six months

It's never too soon to introduce books to babies. Some radical thinkers in this area suggest starting at nine months old, but why leave it so late? You could begin at birth, turning book-time into quality-time for you and baby.

FAVE RAVE:
Little Ladybird Playbook! illustrated by Justine Williams
This is a colourful, soft cloth book that babies will enjoy grabbing and squeezing. On the front cover there's a furry texture to feel on the ladybird's back. Your baby will like looking at the brightly coloured pages and seeing all the different characters, including a sweet-faced frog, a happy spider and a wiggly worn.

Mum of a two-month-old comments: "I remember cloth books from my childhood and it's great that they are still around. I've been making up names for the colourful creatures."
Published by Ladybird Books, £3.99

HONOURABLE MENTION:
Tiny Teethers - Wild! by Melanie Walsh
Here's a fun, easy-grip boardbook for teething babies. You can detach the plastic, water-filled ring whenever you want to wash it, and when your baby starts teething you can help to soothe those sore gums by putting the ring in the fridge first (but don't put it in the freezer).

The book itself is bright and cheerful, with drawings of different animals and the noises they make. The snakes hisses and the crocodile snaps - your baby will love it if you make the animal noises when looking at these pictures.
