This is the longest part of labour. For the first time mother it takes on average 12 to 14 hours, for a second time mother 6 to 10 hours, and it can be shorter still for subsequent babies. However, labours vary enormously, and some women experience only an hour or so of contractions, while for others the first stage can last 18 to 24 hours.
