Is
my home suitable?
Very few homes are genuinely unsuitable for home births. After all,
women all around the globe have given birth in much more awkward places
than a high rise apartment, for example. However, it is worth thinking
about possible problems if only to have a back-up plan if things go wrong.
Some ideas include;
- Warmth. Is your home warm and cosy or can it be made this way
for the birth?
- Privacy. Will your home be quiet and peaceful and will you
have the privacy needed for a relaxed labour and birth?
- Siblings. Babyworld midwife Hannah Hulme Hunter says, "It is
important to arrange for somebody to look after your other children
- in addition to your partner - whilst you are actually in labour. Although
you may wish your children to be with you at this time, it is crucial
that you have an alternative plan. Worrying about the welfare of children
(or partners!) can actually slow down the progress of labour
- Pets. Do you have any pets? Can they be out of the way or will
someone be able to look after them?
- Telephone. Do you have a telephone or at least quick access
to a neighbour's phone? As Hannah points out, "the midwife's mobile
phone may not work well from inside your house."
- You. Most importantly, does it feel right for you? If you are
happy and comfortable in your home and have made the choice which is
right for you, then there is no reason why your home shouldn't be perfect
for delivering your baby.
