Labour and BirthLabour and Birth

Welcome to the labour and birth section of the site where support, advice and guidance can be found to help you prepare for labour and birth.

You will also find information on the signs of labour, assisted delivery, caesarean and home births and how to make a birth plan.

As you approach or are in the third trimester of pregnancy your thoughts will be turning towards labour and birth. Mums often ask am I in labour? and you can read about what signs to look for. It is also a good time to consider writing a birth plan and read what happens in labour. For some you will need to consider what to pack for a hospital birth.

You will see many different terms surrounding birth, such as assisted delivery so we explain what that is. We also know that understanding what the right pain relief in labour is for you and what happens when you are overdue and need to be induced. Some births are by caesarean section and some babies are born premature.

Not everyone wants a hospital birth and you have the right to choose a birth to suit you such as a home birth as well as a water birth.

If you are having twins and more you can read how labour and birth can be affected.

This can be a difficult and exciting time for dads as they approach the labour and ultimate birth of their baby. Dads needs supporting too and you can get some ideas on how to help make the experience for dads a beautiful and memorable one.

As you approach the birth of your baby you may get that "nesting" feeling of wanting everything clean around you, so hygiene in your home may become very important to you.

When your baby is born they will have development checks carried out from newborn onwards and understanding some of the tests such as the Agpar test, and the first day tests will help you relax and enjoy your newborn baby.

It may seem hard to believe but you will be asked about contraception very soon after the birth of your baby so be prepared!

As soon as your baby is born you should make sure you are aware of the benefits available to you such as Child Trust Funds and saving for your baby's future.

You will also need to register your baby to obtain your child allowance and other financial benefits.

This can also be a time to look into making a will if you have not already done so.

Are you confused by all the terminology used, especially around the birth, if so we have put together glossary of terms for you.

You will find our extensive A-Z list of useful organisations a quick way to find an organisation to help you with anything from allergies to women's health.
