Breastfeeding after a Caesarean

Breastfeeding is perfectly possible if you’ve had a Caesarean. It’s just a question of making yourself comfortable while you’re feeding your baby. You can do this by tucking his body under your arm and supporting his head with your hand so that he doesn’t press on your tummy when he goes to the breast. Or you can lie on your side in bed and bring your baby up to the level of your breast with pillows.

The drugs you are having for pain relief will pass in minute quantities to your baby through the breastmilk, but they shouldn’t affect him very much and the important thing is for you to be without pain so that you can hold and feed him comfortably. If you don’t have adequate pain relief, you won’t feel like feeding at all!

If you are having any difficulties with breastfeeding, ask immediately for help. It’s much better to get problems sorted out as soon as they occur, rather than waiting until your nipples have become very sore and your baby is frustrated and unhappy.
