Anencephaly

What is it?

Anencephaly is a congenital condition where the baby’s skull does not form properly and the brain may not develop at all.

What causes it?

This is a congenital condition which means that something goes wrong during the baby’s development in the womb. It can be detected by amniocentesis.

Life expectancy

These babies (mostly girls) cannot live for long after birth.
