Safety equipment

Think seriously about what safety equipment is necessary in your home then buy it in good time before you need it. Remember that it’s not just what you use, but how you use it.

  • Baby monitor
A baby monitor alerts you to sounds, even from a distance. Many parents find the use of a monitor allows them to relax, knowing they'll hear when their baby needs them. But a monitor won’t pick up dangers such as a fire in the house, so don’t be tempted to pop down the road or next door relying on the monitor to let you know if there’s a problem.
  • Safety harness
A baby able to sit up or be propped up in the pram needs a safety harness to prevent him tipping himself over the side, or toppling out when you steer the pram down a steep curb. Pushchairs should also be used with a safety harness which goes over the shoulders as well as around the waist and between the legs - and this should be used from the beginning (many pushchairs have their own safety harness built in). Use a safety harness with a highchair, too. Leave the harness fixed to the highchair all the time, so you automatically put it on when you put him in the highchair. Use a harness when you put your baby in the seat of a supermarket trolley as well.
  • Reins
For a toddler a harness and set of walking reins or a wrist link will keep him safe when out and about.
