Contraindications

There are very few genuine reasons why an immunisation should not be given. Let your doctor or health visitor know if your child:

  • Is unwell or has a fever (the injection can be delayed until they are better)
  • Has had complications from any previous immunisations
  • Has had a previous severe allergic reaction after eating eggs (this means a swollen mouth and throat, difficulty in breathing, shock, or a rash on the face and body, like the red and white patches after a nettle sting). This is because some vaccines are cultured on egg. Click here to read about the latest research on vaccination and egg allergy.
  • Is taking any medicine, particularly steroids
