Things to do when you're breastfeedingDid you know that breastfeeding can make right-handers more proficient with their left hand?! Find out what babyworlders get up to when feeding! 'I use my Nintendo DS (as recommended by another mummy on here) when
I am doing the bedtime feed as she can feed for up to an hour. I bought
Scrabble and Brain Training which have helped regain my pre-baby brain!
Also, I find a catch-up with a magazine that you haven't time to read
is brilliant for those long feeding sessions. 'I surf the net and of course catch up on Babyworld while breastfeeding.
I also do some of my paperwork when she's on the left side. 'My physio suggested doing pelvic floor exercises whilst breastfeeding
as my son is my fourth. I usually make the tea, help with homework, put
the washing in whilst feeding him! Once I accidentally answered the door
to the postman.' 'With my son I mainly watched DVDs. I found I couldn't concentrate well
enough to read. Chatting on the phone or sitting drinking coffee with
friends in Cafe Nero were also good. With my daughter feeds have generally
been shorter and there's my son to entertain too! Reading stories works
well, as does sitting on the floor with him while he plays or does jigsaw
puzzles.' 'If I'm on my own or it's bedtime I usually watch TV. Sometimes I talk
on the phone. When my first son is around I usually read to him whilst
feeding. When my first son was a baby I either watched TV or read whilst
feeding.' 'When my second son was little I had him in the sling and just got on
with stuff but now that he is so heavy I sit and I read a book, or watch
TV. It was the night-time feeds that used to drive me mad as I did them
in the dark so as not to wake him or my husband too much and would find
my mind thinking about all sorts of crap and it would make me feel wide
awake. Then I worked out how to feed lying down and just went back to
sleep whilst he fed!' 'I did Sudoku! I'm much better doing things with my left hand now. I
can't do anything now though as my daughter's so long I need both hands
to hold her.' 'With my son I surfed the net/Babyworld and watched TV. Once he was
a bit older and easily distracted I contemplated life and looked out the
window a lot! With my daughter I have done a variety of things - entertain
my son, gone on the phone, surfed the net etc. I also did Sudoku for a
while and, like liloo, my left-handed writing came on a lot! My daughter
has been easily distracted for a long time so getting near the laptop
or TV is a bad idea. Though I can play the PSP (one-handed games such
as Brain Training and Sudoku) and surf the net on the PSP when she's feeding.
I learned to sleep while feeding with my daughter. I really wish I had
worked that out with my son and had "napped when he napped" all those
times!' 'While breastfeeding I do quite a few different things, such as gaze
at and talk to my son while he feeds, talk and read to or play with my
daughter, write shopping lists, read books, do crosswords, do online shopping,
check Babyworld, watch TV and DVDs, online banking, etc. While visiting
a relative recently I even chased my daughter around the living room whilst
breastfeeding. That is not a regular thing however as I much prefer to
be sat down!' Where to next?
