Thank you for sending in your stories, they poured in, in their
hundreds. The tales you had to tell were awesome and really showed
that you need more than just mammary glands to breastfeed - other
vital ingredients include determination, a supportive partner, stubbornness,
a thick skin to withstand all the contrasting and sometimes downright
unhelpful advice you get, a sense of humour helps and a good dollop
of perseverance.
It was a tough call for the judging panel - Steph Neuman, Editor,
Zita West acupuncturist, midwife and author, and Jill Welsh Lactation
consultant for Lansinoh Laboratories. Your stories ranged from those
who were passionate from the day they conceived that they were going
to breastfeed to those that only decided the day their baby was
born to give it a try, a wonderful range of inspiring and passionate
accounts of your breastfeeding 'journey'.
Your stories beautifully illustrate that there is no one 'type'
of mother who breastfeeds. And despite great difficulties, all these
stories show that it is worth persevering because these mums go
on to experience something very unique and special.
Our
winner Fiona Wallace Carvall stood out because it is quite incredible
how she managed to cope whilst going through horrendous traumas,
the ambulance her son was transferred in was involved in an accident
resulting in bad injuries on top of the heart defect he was suffering
from. Her courageousness hopefully will inspire other women to persevere
when the going gets tough! Read Fiona's story...
Our second prize winners are Melody
Grace Bateman and Ellen Ledingham. Ellen chose to make an advert
for breastfeeding inspired by a Nike ad she saw years ago and we
think it has a simple passionate message to inspire others. Melody's
story turns around our pre-conceieved notions of who makes a good
breast-feeder. At the tender age of 17 Melody managed to push through
the unhelpful advice, pain and prejudice to become a long-term breastfeeder.
Her inspiring story really could make the difference to other mums
giving breastfeeding a go or to keep going.
