Babyworlders 'fess up about their children's nasty habits!

"I caught my son licking the lid of the bin…"

"My son likes to pick his nose and eat it; I don't know why as he's never seen anyone else do it (I hope!). It must be some sort of primeval thing! His main bad habit revolves around the bin - he puts everything in it! The remote control, the telephone, a saucepan... I once caught him licking the lid!"

"Is hitting me in the face a sign of affection?"

"My son hits me in the face. I don't know if that counts as a bad habit, but it's certainly not a good one. I always tell him off, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm the only person he does it to, so maybe it's a sign of affection. Or maybe he's just a little brat!"

"He copies his dad and picks his toes"

"My son picks at the skin on his toes. I'm sure he's got that off his father though. He also has an obsession with his winky, but only when he can see it, i.e. when he's in the bath or just got out, he sits and fiddles with it with a look of intense concentration on his face. I put baby lotion on him after a bath and he helps me to rub it in, but goes loopy if I miss out his winky! I don't usually make a big issue of it, but I tell him not to do it and try to distract him with something else, this usually works now because he's only two-and-a-half, but I'm not sure how it will work in the future!"

"She wipes her nose all down her sleeve"

"For a sweet girl, Alice is disgusting. She's a nose-picker too (although she denies it and says she's 'just itching'). She went through a big phase of sticking her hand down her pants and fiddling about; and rather than get a tissue, she'll just wipe her nose all down her sleeve, or on her hand then wipe her hand on her clothes, so she has slug trails of snot all down herself.

Oh, and because I'm forever reminding her to wash her hands after going to the toilet, her latest one is to shove her fingers under my nose and say 'smell my hands' to prove they've been washed with soap. This is fine if they have been washed, but when she's forgotten...."

"It's when she says 'yum yum' that it's really gross"

"My daughter is a nose-picker at times - it's when she then eats it and goes 'yum yum' that it's really gross. I've taken to saying that I'm not going to look at her and the novelty wears off. She occasionally goes through hitting phases. We put her on the naughty step and say that no one wants to talk or play with her until she says sorry and then we get on with other stuff. This seems to work - it's certainly not something she does very often and usually it's frustration/tiredness that triggers it."

"I let my son talk to cold-callers to get rid of them"

"My daughter Izzabelle is a licker; she licks everything in sight! The first thing she will try and do when she meets someone new is to lick them! And if she can't reach their face then she will try and get her slobbery tongue onto their shoes.

We tell her it's dirty because she doesn't stop otherwise, and God knows what germs she could end up with. Her other 'bad' habit is taking her nappy off; she's trying to potty train herself after watching us do it with the eldest two, and it's turning into a cleaning up frenzy following her around!

"Ashton's worst has to be his obsession to talk to everyone on the phone that I call or who calls me. I quite often just pass him the phone when I get a cold caller now and just wait for them to hang up. Otherwise, I have to wait until he's in bed at night before I make any important calls as he'll just stand there the whole time saying 'I want to talk, please mummy, me, me, me!'' over and over again."

"My daughter hides the remote control"

"Nose picking, nail and skin biting, head-scratching (no nits!) and gurning ... funnily enough, all the things that my husband does! My eldest daughter also has a very bad habit of switching the TV over to CBeebies and then she hides the remote control. I often get back from the pre-school run, sit down for a quick coffee and a bit of news only to find I've got to spend the next half hour trying to find the darn thing first."

"My daughter burps like a docker"

"My ever so dainty three-and-a-half-year-old burps like a docker. You have never heard such a loud noise come from a tiny little girl. She will burp then look around and proudly say, in a loud voice, 'Excuse me piggy!'. She also picks her nose and bites her toenails: classy."

"My son hides dummies up his sleeve"

"Benjamin likes to strip wherever we are. He has got very good at taking his trousers and nappy off, then he wees on the floor and goes and takes a seat on the potty clapping his hands! "We have recently started to wean him off the dummy during the daytime; he can still have one at night.

Well the cheeky man has been hiding dummies up his sleeves when he finds any so he has one during the day. I don't understand where he is getting them from!"
