Trying for a baby: egg donation

Q.

"My fiancée was born with Turner’s syndrome and cannot conceive a child because she doesn't produce eggs. As our local health authority won't provide IVF, where can we go for the most affordable treatment?"

A.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority keep a list of all the centres performing IVF with donated eggs and the pregnancy rates that each centre has achieved. They can be contacted at Paxton House, 30 Artillery Lane, London E1 7LS. Tel: 020 7377 5077 or visit their website at www.hfea.gov.uk.

A reasonable price to pay would be about £1500 plus the drugs necessary to stimulate the donor (about another £1000). Each egg donor usually donates to two recipients and you may pay less if you are the second recipient, but in this case, it might not be possible to treat you if not enough eggs are obtained. Pregnancy rates are a little better than 1 chance in 3. The main problem with donated eggs is finding a woman who is willing to donate. Most units will not use a donor who is known by the patient because of potential difficulties when the child is born. Any woman who is under 35 and who would like to donate can contact her local IVF unit and ask for details.
