Pre-Pregnancy: Fertility problems

Q.

Could fortnightly periods affect my fertility?

A.

If your periods (counting first day to first day) are only 24 days or less apart, you are probably not ovulating and this would therefore certainly affect your chances of pregnancy. It would be worth requesting that your GP arranges some blood tests (including a full blood count, thyroid function tests and a hormone profile) to try to establish why you are bleeding so frequently. You should also ensure that you are up to date with your cervical smears and it may be sensible for swabs to be taken to exclude any vaginal or pelvic infection. If none of these tests reveals any problem but the pattern continues, it would be reasonable for you to be referred to a gynaecologist for further assessment and investigation.
