Pre-Pregnancy: Fertility problemsQ.What is the cause of subfertility?A.Unexplained subfertility is a very frustrating condition and, sadly, very common. About 1 in 5 of all couples with difficulty conceiving do not have any obvious abnormality. It is, of course, possible that something has happened to create a single major barrier to you conceiving, such as your endometrium possibly no longer being able to support implantation of an embryo. There are no tests available for such theoretical conditions and there are not likely to be in the near future either. What is probably more likely is that there is a different reason why you do not conceive each month. For example in January you might not ovulate, the sperm count might be low in February, your fallopian tubes might go into spasm in March and so on. This is only a theory about why unexplained subfertility might occur - we would have to do every test every month to prove it. IVF bypasses most barriers and is therefore the treatment of choice. Sadly, the pregnancy rate is only 1 in 3 treatment cycles |
