Pre-Pregnancy: Fertility problemsQ.What is unexplained subfertility?A.This is when all the baseline investigations are within the usual range and there does not seem to be an obvious reason why a couple have failed to conceive. Sadly, this is very common. About a fifth of all couples fall into this category and no amount of investigation will be helpful with our current scientific knowledge. Because it is so common, however, we know how many couples with unexplained subfertility eventually succeed with a pregnancy. If the female partner is less than 35 years old and the couple have been trying for less than three years, the chances of conception in the next 24 months is in the region of 70 per cent. This compares to a live birth rate of about 25 per cent for IVF. Remember, however, that this is per cycle and you could have several attempts at IVF in two years. |
