Pre-Pregnancy: Fertility problems

Q.

What causes irregular periods?

A.

Irregular periods must mean either irregular ovulation or no ovulation at all. The converse is not true as regular periods are not always indicative of ovulation (although it is fair to say they usually are). By far the most common cause of irregular periods is polycystic ovaries or PCOS. The oral contraceptive pill will mask PCOS but when it is stopped the ovaries revert to what is natural for them. An ultrasound scan and some blood tests may confirm the diagnosis or detect some other reason why your periods (and possibly your ovulations) are so irregular.
