Pre-Pregnancy: Male fertility

Q.

Does male fertility decrease with age?

A.

It is always said that male fertility falls very slowly with age (unlike in the female). A one per cent reduction per year after the age of about 20 has been suggested. However, some recent research by scientists from Bristol and Brunel Universities may suggest male age is more important than we once thought - for every year the man is aged over 24 years, the chances of conceiving within six months fall by 2 per cent a year and within 12 months by 3 per cent a year. One thing is for sure - coital frequency does not impair male fertility, even though the volume of the ejaculate may reduce. Anything from twice a week to twice a day is OK.
