Meet the Mumpreneurs!

<< continued from page 2

Behind every great baby idea there's a mum who's been there, done that, and had baby posset on her T-shirt. Babyworld takes a look at 'mumpreneurs' who have used their experience of parenthood to forge a new career…

Babylicious

Have you struggled to cook nutritious, colourful and tasty meals for your baby… only for it to be thrown onto the floor in disgust? Well, why be a martyr when all you have to do is defrost a healthy meal from the freezer?

Sally Preston set up Babylicious in September 2001. She came up with the idea of producing frozen baby food when she became a mum and spent hours in the kitchen pureeing food for her two children. Sally was surprised that no one had come up with the idea of frozen baby food before, and was so convinced that this would be a success that she re-mortgaged her home and set up business from her kitchen and dining room. The first product was launched in May 2002, and the company has grown rapidly since. Today, a mere 'toddler' at only two years old, Babylicious is the biggest manufacturer of frozen baby food in Europe, with plans to introduce the brand to parents worldwide.

In October 2003, Sally picked up a prestigious collection of awards, including the HSBC 'Start up Stars' Award, where she scooped the top prize for 'Best New Business', beating off competition from over 500 UK businesses. She used the £20,000 prize money to pay back her parents for their investment in her company. In addition, Babylicious boasts one of the most famous fans of all; Victoria Beckham fed Babylicious to her son Romeo when he was a small baby!

Mind the bump!

Your bump can put a lot of pressure on your joints when you're trying to be active during pregnancy. A little bit of tummy support can go a long way, as Carolyn Seet, founder of Mind the Bump, discovered…

'Mind the Bump was thought up after I spent several weeks looking for a good and reasonably priced maternity support belt. I found my bump ached a great deal during walks. Supporting it with one hand didn't look very smart! I couldn't find a belt that was within my budget that didn't cut into my skin. When I found the source for the basic belt, I bought one to try. The result was immediate! I could go shopping and enjoy long walks in the park, right up to the day before my baby was born. There were even times I could semi-run for the bus! (Although I would never recommend you do that!)

I grew up in South East Asia, where it is common for the new mother to have a waist bound tightly by cloth. This was practised to ensure she regained her figure quickly after the birth, as well to give support to the overstretched abdominal muscles in order for her to get back on her feet. Our belts and briefs are a modern take on this tradition. As I could not find any such products here, I decided to start Mind the Bump so that other mothers can benefit.

I sincerely hope that you will have a more comfortable pregnancy and post-pregnancy experience using the products.'
