DIARY
OF A DAD-TO-BE
WEEK 38
As we approach the 'finishing line' of this seemingly never-ending
pregnancy it’s good to be reminded of, in essence, why we are doing
it.
With two weeks to go comes an occasion that makes us think:
"yes, having kids is the best thing in the world" –
a family get-together.
It’s Maria’s parents’ ruby wedding anniversary and their
collection of five grandchildren are gathered before us as we begin
the celebrations.
At the moment they have a crop of boys – ranging from eight to
two months, the male side of the species has a monopoly. We wonder
whether the little bundle growing steadily inside Maria’s womb will
be a landmark first girl.
For me it’s just pure fantasy to even guess which sex our
second-born will be but, curiously, it seems all the women at the
party have a clear opinion: It’ll be another boy" is the
chorus, and even Maria agrees with them.
I point out that it’s a 50-50 chance and query what reasoning
goes behind the utterly confident prediction: "I can just sense
it," says Maria’s sister-in-law. Feminine intuition?
The festivities continue with a glut of photos. Maria’s parents
have hired a photographer and he busily tries to organise us all. It
reminds me of our wedding, only this time everyone is keeping an eye
on the mischievous lads – Sam in the forefront.
Despite being only 18 months, with his little legs unable to keep
up with the others, he seems the centre of attention as his various
aunts and uncles dote on his every action – it’s a great age to
be.
Somehow the 'snapper' manages to coax and cajole the boys into
smiling at the same time and the result is just brilliant – who will
be joining family album in a few weeks time?
