DIARY OF A DAD-TO-BE

WEEK 27

Another week, another check-up.

This time it’s routine, an appointment with the midwife. Maria is pleased to see a familiar place at the health centre, one of the midwives involved in Sam’s birth is on duty. It’s the first time she’d seen our son since he was a month old and the predictable, but nonetheless pleasing, comments on how big he is and how well he talks ensue. Human nature dictates that even medical professionals succumb to small talk.

All the necessary checks are carried out and all is well… more relief. Maria is in fine shape after a stressful time. With a mother and sister who suffered from high blood pressure throughout their pregnancies, it’s comforting for me to see my wife standing up to the strain with a clean bill of health. I’ve seen the pressure my sister was under with a cloud hanging over her during her two deliveries. Thankfully HBP is something Maria appears to be immune to, despite all the anxieties.

The week ends with us trying to explain to Sam the reason for the increasing size of his Mummy’s tummy. He seems to have a vague understanding and begins to 'talk' to the baby – cute.
