Breastfeeding benefits

Breastfeeding experts say that statistics are increasingly showing that new mums don't choose to breastfeed and believe that the images commonly portrayed in society and on television don't encourage women.

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) is calling on television programme makers, and in particular popular soaps, to give breastfeeding a positive boost. Find out more here

What are the benefits of breastfeeding?

  •   Contributes to the physiological development of the infant
  •   Reduces the risk of allergies, particularly eczema, in infants when there is a family history of allergy
  •   Reduces incidence of ear infections
  •   Protects infants from stomach upsets
  •   Can lead to a more rapid return to pre-pregnancy weight
  •   Reduces the risk to mothers of pre-menopausal breast cancer

Breastfeeding is a skill that both mothers and babies have to learn and it's not always easy to pick up. In fact, many women stop breastfeeding before they intended because it proves too difficult or because they are worried that their baby is not getting enough milk. New mums, in particular, can struggle with breastfeeding if they are not given the help and support they need, which is why we've listed several support and information organisations below.
