Expert advice Q&A

Can I take ibuprofen while breast feeding?

Some manufacturers do advise that ibuprofen should be avoided while breastfeeding. Small amounts of the drug do pass into the milk but these amounts are considered to be too small to be harmful. As it is not proven to be 100 per cent safe, most experts would say that it should only be taken if absolutely necessary. However, if you're suffering from arthritis and simple analgesia such as paracetamol is insufficient to control your symptoms, then ibuprofen is the obvious next option. There is no reason why you should not continue to breastfeed while using ibuprofen.
