Expert advice Q&A

Is it safe to take stemetil in early pregnancy for morning sickness?

It is always advisable to avoid medicines in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. However, Stemetil (otherwise known as prochlorperazine) is a phenothiazine, and this type of medication is considered to be safe for use in the first trimester of pregnancy. There is some concern about its use in the final three months of pregnancy when its regular use might cause movement disorders in the baby. It has been around for many years and has been used for pregnancy-related nausea in many women. If its use were associated with any abnormalities, it is likely that these would have become evident by now. Try not to worry. Relax and enjoy the coming weeks.
