Swollen glands

Neck lumps are common in children, and usually represent swollen lymph glands. These are the home of the white blood cells, the soldiers of the immune system. Their job is to detect and destroy viruses and bacteria, which are constantly entering the body through the mouth, nose, ears, eyes and gut.

The fact that we are not constantly ill is down to the tireless activity of the immune system. It is always on guard and working hard to keep us well.

When we are ill, many glands around the body can temporarily enlarge. These are felt under the angles of the jaw, in the armpits and in the groins. It is normal for lymph glands to wax and wane in size over a period of a few weeks. Providing the change is temporary, there is no need to worry.

What to do

  • If a lump is present without shrinking for more than four weeks, it is wise to get advice from your doctor in a non-urgent appointment.
