Styes

These small abscesses are caused by an eyelash hair follicle becoming infected and show as red, swollen areas on the upper or lower eyelids.

What to do

  • Use warm compresses to relieve discomfort and help any pus to drain away.
  • Bathe away any discharge with tepid water and cotton wool - always wipe from the inner to the outer part of the eye with a gentle sweeping motion.
  • If your child is in a lot of discomfort, see the GP who can prescribe antibiotic ointment to help clear up the infection.
