During pregnancy, expectant mums may not be pleased
to find that as the body transforms itself they are more prone to
haemorrhoids, with an estimated 46% of pregnant women suffering
. On top of that the NHS estimates that approximately 40% of women
experience constipation , often as a result of hormonal changes
that slow down their bowel movements. This constipation can then
cause or aggravate haemorrhoids as a result of the improper bowel
movements.
The best way to try to prevent haemorrhoids when you
are pregnant is to try to avoid becoming constipated. Ensure that
you eat a high fibre diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables
and drink plenty of fluids. Exercise regularly too, even if it's
a short brisk walk. Pelvic floor exercises are also good to strengthen
and tone the muscles and may aid in preventing haemorrhoids after
delivery. Finally avoid straining when you are using the toilet
as this can put pressure on the area.
If you are in the 46% of those who are unfortunate
enough to suffer from haemorrhoids there are a few ways that you
can alleviate the symptoms.
- Take a warm bath as some find that this can ease discomfort.
Alternatively others find that an ice pack can help when applied
to the affected area, make sure that the ice pack has a soft covering.
- Take the pressure off your veins in the lower body and if possible
avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time.
- Gently but thoroughly clean the affected area after each bowel
movement. Some women find using a moist wipe such as Nelsons H+care
Soothing Hygienic Wipes more comfortable than using toilet tissue.
Nelsons H+care Soothing Hygienic Wipes come in a handy package
with a moisture lock lid and are perfume free, flushable and biodegradable.
