Our last Christmas before the baby arrives

They say that children change your life for ever. So how do you spend the last Christmas before your baby arrives?

At a big family get-together? Or a cosy time for two? Babyworld members share their experiences: all of which memorable, but not always for the right reasons!

'I had a fab time in London'

'I was six months pregnant at the last Christmas we had together, and we celebrated by spending the weekend before in London. We stayed in a massive budget hotel in Piccadilly Circus, went to see Morrissey at Earl's Court, and spent most of the rest of the time wandering around London buying shampoo from Boots at two in the morning just because we could. It were bl**dy marvellous!'

'We went to Butlins for three days'

'I was four months pregnant and we went to stay with my sister-in-law. We had a relaxing one! On Boxing Day, we went to Butlins for three days, which was fun but very cold!'

'We had a fairytale Christmas... in Lapland!'

'Last Christmas, we went away to Lapland from the 23 to 26 December, so we actually spent Christmas Day there. It was when we also started trying for a baby together. Was absolutely beautiful, such a fairytale Christmas.'

'I just sat with my swollen feet up and was waited on'

'I was six months pregnant with my son and absolutely huge. On Christmas Eve, we went out for a nice lunch and Christmas Day was spent at our friends' house. It was their first Christmas in their new house and the first one where my friend wasn't going to see her family so it was special for all of us. After lunch, my friend and I went up to the stables to feed her horse etc - it felt really Christmassy and I loved it! I just sat with my feet up (swollen ankles) for most of the day while they all waited on me....never happened since though.'

'I felt fat and fed up'

'I had a very quiet Christmas at my mum's, feeling very fat and fed up. My son was due three days after Christmas, but didn't arrive until after the New Year, so Hogmanay was a very quiet affair too.'
Avril

'I spent it in A&E'

'I was eight months pregnant on our last childless Christmas and we spent a good part of Christmas Eve in A&E - with my husband on a nebuliser. He'd had an asthma attack brought on by my mother's pet-infested house!'

'I felt my baby move for the first time'

'We didn't do anything special on that last childless Christmas (being nurses, both of us have to work over Christmas so we can never go anywhere or even spend it with family). But I was 19 weeks pregnant on Christmas Day and the evening before I felt our baby move for the first time. So I spent Christmas Eve curled up on the sofa feeling her move all evening - it felt very special. The following year, I was 8 weeks pregnant with my son and hadn't told my family about being pregnant. We went to see them the week before Christmas to have our 'early Christmas' with them (Christmas dinner, opening of presents etc) and it was lovely to see their faces when they opened their Christmas cards from us as I had just put 'and bump' at the end of our names.'

'I spent it sticking out my teeny baby bump'

'Last Christmas, I spent most of the festive period sticking out my teeny baby bump as far as I could. This Christmas, I'll be trying to suck in the same size post-baby podge as much as I can!'

'I ate everything bar the prawns'

'Our last Christmas together was eight years ago. I was seven months pregnant and oblivious to the fact that four weeks later I'd be a mum. We had my mum, dad, gran, gran's brother and sister-in-law for dinner. My aunt was in a home and didn't want to go back to the home and kept trying to delay going. We had the full works: prawn cocktail, soup, turkey and all the trimmings followed by Christmas Pud or chocolate fudge cake. I managed to eat everything bar the prawns. They finally left at 5.30pm and at 6pm we headed to my in-laws. I was just exhausted. Everyone had bought me clothes for some odd reason and I could have cried. I then fell asleep and got put in the attic as they wouldn't move anyone else who was staying with them out of the downstairs room. So when I woke up at 11pm I insisted on driving home for comforts. I then refused on Boxing Day to go to the in-laws for a meal as I needed my rest. The following weekend was the Millennium and I was up til 4am making the most of the last New Year when I could go out!'

'I spent it hoping and praying I wouldn't go into labour before I'd eaten my Christmas dinner!'

'I was 39 weeks pregnant on our last childless Christmas Eve and spent most of it hoping and praying that she didn't make an appearance while eating my Christmas dinner. I'd looked forward to it all year... little did I know that she wouldn't turn up for another two weeks! On New Year's Eve, I was dropping a friend off home after a house party we'd been too (designated driver), when I got pulled over by the police. They asked me to step out of the car so they could breathalise me. I wish I had a camera to take a picture of their faces when I asked if they could help me out the car, and when I told them my baby was due yesterday! They offered to follow me back to make sure I got back to the party all right without going into labour!'

'We had a quiet Christmas on our own'

'The year before last we had a quiet Christmas: just the two of us. We hadn't had a Christmas by ourselves before so wanted one before we became three! I was 6 months pregnant, couldn't drink but had a lovely time.'
Ruth

'I had my belly prodded and poked'

'The year before last, I was eight-and-a-half months pregnant with a massive belly. We visited our family and I didn't have to do a lot. All the family marvelled at the size of my belly and poor Josh was truly prodded and poked!'
