Knowing and naming
Early in the year, Kate had suspected she was pregnant and bought a home pregnancy test from her local chemist. Although it was positive, she and Jefferson waited until her 12-week scan before announcing the news to the world. "It's true. I am pregnant!" Kate finally said in March. "The baby is due in October and I couldn't be more delighted." Broody Kate proudly showed off her scan to her friends at the Savoy Hotel, London that night, after breaking the news to Jefferson's parents, who were thrilled. After the baby was born, the couple kept the world guessing as to the name of their daughter, and many newspapers reported she was called Lola. However, a fortnight later an official statement was released: "In response to numerous press inquiries, Kate Moss and Jefferson Hack are pleased to announce that their beautiful baby daughter is to be called Lila Grace." Although the inspiration for the unusual name Lila is unknown, it is the Arabic word for "night", a diminutive of "Delilah" and also a variant form of "Leila".

Getting fatter by the minute
Known for being super slim, at first Kate seemed determined not to buy maternity clothes. She persisted in wearing fashionable hipster jeans and gypsy tops, covering her bump with wide belts or scarves, but having been caught out with her jeans' top button undone, Kate had to give in to her inevitable growth. Sporting a colourful range of patterned kaftans, the model happily munched on McDonalds' burger and fries. Continuing her work as the face of Rimmel she looked faintly comical on set for one ad - her top half was the picture of elegance in full make-up and swathes of white silk, her bottom half shapeless comfort, baggy trousers and wellies! However, Kate refused to compromise her femininity during pregnancy and splashed out on six pairs of sexy knickers from Notting Hill's Myla, costing £99 each. As they are not designed for maternity she had them customised to accommodate her bump and altered to hang low for use with hipsters.

Health and wellbeing
Kate was so desperate to conceive that she said she was prepared to turn to science if she could not manage it naturally. Fortunately for her that was not necessary and her pregnancy was complication-free. "I haven't even felt sick yet," she said at three months. "It's wonderful." Kate had always been keen to experience the changes in her body: "I'm curious to know what it's like to be eating for two." However, not all aspects of pregnancy appealed to the party girl and she found it hard to quit drinking and smoking. "Kate is known as a heavy smoker, but now she is pregnant, things are different," said her publicist. "I am quite sure she is following doctor's orders and trying to give up - and if she can't she will have been cutting down drastically." Even though she must have been aware of the risks, Kate was still occasionally spotted smoking as late as five months pregnant, before eventually kicking the habit.

Emotions
Kate had become increasingly broody over the years as her social circle, including Sadie Frost, Meg Matthews, Fran Cutler and Jade Jagger, surrounded her with children. "Everyone seems to be having babies at the moment," she said a while ago. "If I haven't met Mr Right in a few years, I'm going to do it anyway." Even her father said her pregnancy was no surprise. "I knew she'd have children eventually," he smiled. "I know she wants that more than anything." And after she'd popped? "They are delighted about it," said Jefferson's dad.

The birth itself
Following in the footsteps of celeb mums Kate Winslet and Sadie Frost, Kate paid in the region of £5,000 to give birth at the St John and St Elizabeth Hospital in London's St John's Wood. The hospital's Holistic Birth Unit offers masseurs, aromatherapists, homeopaths, reflexologists, hypnotists and a birthing pool for a more natural delivery. Labour began while Kate was dining with Sadie Frost, Jude Law and their newborn son, Rudy, at the Lemonia restaurant in Primrose Hill. Keeping calm, Kate phoned Jefferson and stayed put until he picked her up an hour later. Returning the favour (Kate accompanied Sadie during Rudy's birth), Sadie remained present for the birth itself. Lila was delivered by Dr Yehudi Gordon in the early hours of the following morning, Sunday 29th September, weighing 6½ lbs. "Both Kate and the baby are in the best of health," reported her modelling agency.

Being a mum
Kate and Jefferson spent £150,000 refurbishing her home in Belsize Park, north London, in preparation for the new arrival, and were spotted buying antique nursery furniture. But broodiness aside, we will have to wait till next year to see how Kate will juggle modelling and motherhood…

What about dad?
Opinions are split as to whether or not Jefferson will make an honest woman of Kate now they are a family. "Often young people don't get married at all these days, do they?" commented his father. Accordingly, Kate has reportedly turned down Jefferson's repeated proposals of marriage, saying that she wants to live together first, but still he remains in hope, and was seen perusing engagement rings in Bond Street jewellers in October.
