Traditional… with a twist"I prefer traditional names at the minute, with a modern twist. We're thinking about names for our first baby at the minute and so far we've got Zach Lewis for a boy and Gracie Ella for a girl. Zach is a lovely name, which at the minute isn't too popular. For a little girl, we were both in love with the name Grace but,
after seeing how popular this name is, we decided to go with Gracie.
I do prefer traditional names, and I could never make up my own child's
name, as I am not that creative. But I do think as a middle name,
you can go that little bit extra and get away with something creative
as you don't really use your middle name that often." Onomastics are oh-so-great"I'm really into onomastics, which is the study of names. I have been obsessed with them since I was a little girl. I personally love older names for girls and slightly more unusual and modern for boys. I also like my children to have a family middle name and a slightly more unusual middle name with some meaning to our family. "My son is called Taylor Michael Rowan, and my Daughter is Isobel Jane Sidonie. My particular hates are boys' names on girls, and nicknames without
a full name on the birth certificate. I've seen girls called Dylan,
James, Tyler, Frankie. It's just grim. "If I were to have another
child today, the names would either be Cora Josephine, Dorothy June
or Violet Celeste for a girl or Rory Christopher, Dominic Morgan or
Tobias Frederick for a boy." Fictional influence"I love older names. My eldest two are named after characters from my favourite childhood book Tom Sawyer: Becky (Rebekah: I wanted the unusual spelling) and Tom (Thomas). My next son is William Edward after my two granddads, and my daughter is Charlotte (I just liked the name). But she has been called Floss since she was tiny as her hair one morning looked like candy floss; she is seven now and hates being called Charlotte but adores Floss! "My youngest is Ethan Stephen: Ethan after the name my husband was using as a screen name the day I met him in an internet chat room, and Stephen is my husband's name. For our next baby we want Harrison (Harry) for a boy, but I love
the name Nalani, which is Hawaiian. I'm still trying to convince my
husband about it! If not, I want a 'witchy' name: maybe a goddess
or a fairy name." Funkier females"I like unique names. I chose my little girl's name Starla because
I want her to be the only one in her class with that name! I do like
traditional names for middle names. I almost called my daughter Lilah
Jane but Lilah suddenly got REALLY popular down here, so changed it
to Starla Jaye! I think you can go a bit more funky with girls names
than you can for boys. For a boy I like the names Parker, Ellis and
Spike." Trade in the traditional"I don't like traditional. My sons are Bailey and Morgan and I have
a nice unusual list for this bubs too! I don't want my children to
be one of many James or Jacks, Jessicas or Chloes (no offence intended).
I don't like overly trendy names: my 52-year-old dad has just had
a baby with his third wife and called him 'Junior': not sure on that!"
You cannot be serious!"Working in an obstetrics theatre for a while, we used to hear some
very peculiar names for babies. The most stupid had to be 'Dwayne'
for a baby, with the surname 'Pipe'. I mean, come on: I can only hope
they were having a laugh at the staff in theatre and they didn't really
call their little boy that!" Golden mouldies"I really don't like 'old' names like George, Harry, Fred, Violet, Martha and Elizabeth because they remind me of old people. But then I don't like 'trendy' names, which are just silly, like Mercedes, Honey, Apple or Sunny-D! I do like less common names, which might sound odd considering my
first daughter is Bethany but when we chose it, it wasn't everywhere
like it is now. And I don't see the need for double-barrelling names
that just don't go together. I know a five-year-old called Zoe-claire."
A celeb stole my daughter's name"I don't particularly like made-up names, but really wanted an unusual name for my son. We decided on Rudy as it is an old name and really uncommon (position 1215 in the charts!) although Jude Law's little boy is also called it. Hopefully he will be the only one in his class called it (although
I was the only Jayne the whole way through school). "For a girl we
had chosen Darcy and I remember sobbing when eight months pregnant
as I read in a magazine that Kate Garraway had had a daughter and
called her it: I felt like she had stolen it from me! Pregnancy hormones,
