Natural Mat - Why is it important for your baby to sleep on a natural
fibre mattress?
Q. Why is it important to get the right mattress for your baby?
Managing sleep for babies and young children is a major main concern
for new parents especially when it comes to choosing the right mattress.
Babies and toddlers spend almost 70% of their time sleeping and playing
on a mattress.
Sleep is the single most important ingredient to a healthy happy life
for both parents and baby! Without sleep, energy levels drop, immune systems
crash and tempers flare.
We all want
to ensure that our babies have the best start in life and that means plenty
of good sleep in a safe, comfortable and natural environment.
In a recent customer survey by Natural Mat, manufacturers of natural
fibre baby mattresses, 100% of mums said their babies sleep better than
ever on their Natural Mat mattress.
'My 5 month old baby has slept like a log since birth on your
Coco Mat.She is my third child and I am so convinced by your natural mattress
that I travel with it everywhere.'
Q. So what are the advantages of natural organic baby mattresses?
Baby mattresses made from natural fibres provide more comfort for the
baby than synthetic mattresses. Benefits include:
- Breathability - Babies are very temperature sensitive and need
a well ventilated mattress so that they can easily regulate their temperature.
Natural fibre baby mattresses allow a constant circulation of air. This
prevents the baby from overheating and allows them to sleep safely and
comfortably.
- Anti-allergy - More and more babies are suffering from allergies
such as asthma. Dust mites, the main cause of allergies, cannot live
in natural fibres such as natural latex or organic coir as the conditions
are not right for them to live or breed in.
Natural Mat's lambswool is bathed in Lavender, Lemon and Eucalyptus,
which also renders it anti-dust mite and gives it certified allergy
protection.
- Naturally Fire Retardant - Natural Mat are they only UK mattress
supplier to pass the British Safety Standards (BS EN597, BS 7177) without
using any chemical fire retardant.
Such retardants have been linked to respiratory problems and skin allergies.
- Longer Lasting Superior Support - Natural fibres are more durable,
supportive and resilient than synthetic foam mattresses.

Q. What are the hazards in standard foam baby mattresses?
There is growing concern about the types of chemicals used in the manufacture
of standard baby mattresses on the market today. When a baby sleeps on
a mattress, he/she inhales air no more than six inches away from the surface
of the mattress.
If that mattress contains chemicals, possible side effects could include
allergies, rashes, asthma, seizures, chemical sensitivities and behavioural
problems when exposed to toxic chemicals.
Cheap polyurethane
mattresses are not a wise choice for many reasons:
- Polyurethane foam is extremely flammable; to combat this hazard industrial
fire retardants are added to the foam and mattress covers.
- Crib, cot and cot bed mattresses made from polyurethane can be very
thin, dip very quickly and offer little support for the child.
- Many baby mattresses have a plastic cover which prevents air circulating
through the mattress increasing the chances of the baby overheating.
This is not only dangerous but can also cause discomfort and disrupted
sleep.
