What is atopic eczema?

Atopic eczema is an inflammation of the skin that is caused when dry skin becomes cracked or broken, and then becomes irritated or inflamed. This can then sometimes cause a knock-on immune reaction, known as a 'flare-up', where the skin becomes even more inflamed and itchy. It is called 'atopic' because it's sometimes, but not always, associated with other allergic reactions like hayfever and asthma.

How do I manage my baby's eczema or dry skin?

There isn't a cure for eczema but there are lots of ways you can help manage it by avoiding things that trigger irritation and by treating the affected skin. Dermatologists recommend the use of complete emollient therapy to manage eczema. E45 provide all the elements needed for a complete emollient regime: E45 Cream*, E45 Emollient Bath Oil and E45 Emollient Wash Cream. And to complement the regime we also recommend keeping some E45 Itch Relief Cream*, to help soothe your baby if itchy eczema is particularly a problem.

If my baby has itchy eczema, what can I do?

E45 Itch Relief Cream* is an important support to a complete emollient regime. It includes special anti-itch ingredients to soothe the itch and, like E45 Cream, it helps re-establish your baby's natural skin barrier against further irritation.

It's suitable for infants and gentle enough to use on the face as well as the body.

Are there any other things I can do to help my baby with eczema?

As well as creating a daily emollient regime for your family there are some things you can do around the house that can make a difference:

  • Use separate soft cotton towels when drying your baby to prevent spreading infection - and dab dry, don't rub.
  • Keep rooms about 18° and humidity at about 50%
  • If you have pets, keep them out of the children's rooms - especially at night - and vacuum regularly to reduce the possibility of irritation.
  • When doing the washing use a double rinse cycle so that your baby's sheets are as detergent-free as possible, and use non-perfumed fabric conditioners.
  • Avoid using fragranced baby shampoo and bubble bath.
