Dot Parry, Midwife
In my job as a midwife, I work mainly in the community in Salford, near Manchester. I care for women during their pregnancies, and in the early postnatal period. I help to staff our local midwife-led unit, which supports women who wish to birth their babies in a home-like environment. I also care for women choosing home birth. I am the leader of the Manchester Birth Centres Group. This is a group of mums, midwives, student midwives, and maternity services campaigners who are working towards setting up small, midwife-led units across Manchester.
Previously I worked in a very busy hospital in Manchester, where women and babies from all over the Northwest can be cared for if they need extra help. I have also been an antenatal teacher for the National Childbirth Trust since 1991.
I believe strongly that midwives need to support normal, physiological birth, so that as many women as possible can birth their babies themselves.
When I'm not at work, I like to spend time with my partner, Andy, and our two children, Ben and Beky. To relax in the little spare time I have, I read science fiction novels and watch too much Star Trek!
